Choosing Between An SUV And A Sedan
SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle, and these cars have high ground clearance, four- or all-wheel drive, two or three rows of seats, a rear door for cargo access, and are designed to keep you comfortable on long trips on highways while having some ability to go off-road. Sedans are the same three-box, four-door cars we’ve always known. They have an engine compartment in the front, a passenger cabin with two rows of seats and four doors, and a lockable trunk in the rear.
SUV Advantages
SUVs have become more popular than ever in the past few years. In fact, they have replaced sedans as the family car of choice, and their popularity shows no signs of slowing.
These are the benefits they offer:
- SUVs offer a lot of space in the cabin for passengers and a lot of space for their luggage too. There’s room for an entire family to stretch out and relax while carrying everything they need.
- AWD is available with a few sedan models but is very common with SUVs. If you live in a place that often experiences snow, rain, or other extreme weather, you’ll be much better off with an SUV equipped with AWD or four-wheel drive as compared to a sedan.
- SUVs have much better ground clearance as compared to sedans. This means a more commanding driving position and better visibility. Combined with AWD, the ride height also makes SUVs great on rutted roads, muds, and rocky trails.
Sedan Advantages
Sedans have always been popular with American drivers and families. There are still several models that manage to hold on to their popularity despite the incredible popularity of SUVs. These reasons make sedans attractive:
- Most sedans are powered by four-cylinder engines or V6s. Whether these engines are turbocharged or naturally aspirated, they offer far better fuel economy ratings than any SUV on the market.
- Sedans are smaller than SUVs. They also have a lower center of gravity. This makes them much better to drive and far easier to park.
- Sedans are also not as expensive as SUVs. So you can save some money by choosing a sedan or get a sedan that’s far more powerful or luxurious than you would get with an SUV of the same price.
